Health Professions Scholarship Program

This scholarship is offered by 3 branches of the military (Navy, Air Force, Army) to a variety of professional students, including dentistry, medicine and nursing. The military will cover 100% of tuition and fees for accepted students in addition to a monthly stipend for housing and living expenses. Many of these scholarships are still available for current students and don’t have to be attained prior to starting professional school.

While in school, students will be covered under the school health insurance program.

With a minimum of 3 years, students owe back one year for each year they were covered under the scholarship.

Scholarship recipients will be required to complete commissioned officer training (COT) prior to service.

Students can complete residency as an active duty service member in a military program and will not incur additional service commitment or complete a civilian residency.

Commissioned officer training (COT) can be completed after all 4 years of school or during the break between the first and second year of school. Medical students will also be required to perform active duty tours throughout school including, basic training, medicine training programs and fourth year rotations.

Students will submit forms for reimbursement (depending on the branch) to the respective contact provided as the need comes up. Christine Coleman in financial aid is aware of the process if a student requires advisement.

Students at UCSF on HPSP can still apply to FAFSA and may be eligible for financial aid (ex. loans) or work study.

The military pays tuition and fees directly to the school and does not require the student to be involved in the process. Be aware that most payments will be late, and UCSF financial aid is aware of this. This should not affect the student’s standing in any way.

Yes, students are eligible to apply to all benefits. For COLS, the student must fill out FAFSA.

The military will not reimburse the purchase of a laptop however, there is the option of renting a laptop (www.laptopsformilitarydocs.com) and the cost will be reimbursed.
